The Department of Pediatrics of JIPMER provides patient care, teaching and research with a diverse community of Faculty and Students. The spectrum of healthy and sick children reaching this department for clinical care provides the students with unparalleled opportunities to learn and serve. Problem solving and Research are central to the academic programs in the department.

Faculty Members, committed to excellence in Pediatric Education, are guiding relevant efforts within each section of the department to foster the next generation of leaders in Paediatric clinical care and Research. The department has been led by a number of renowned figures in Academic Paediatrics and its stability is being provided by the continuing presence of Teachers at Professorial rank.

The Department of Paediatrics housed in the JIPMER Women & Children Hospital(JWCH) has a total bed strength of 227(General 90, Paid wards 21 beds, A& E beds – 24 beds, PICU Level III 19 beds). Department has three general pediatric units (I,II,III) and one Pediatric Critical Care Unit (PICU/A&E).

The Department runs specialty clinics in Child Neurology, Communication disorders, Behaviour assessment and Guidance, Pediatric Nephrology, Cardiology, Genetic counselling , Gastroenterology ,Growth and Development, HIV and Child Neurology clinic and PICU Follow-up clinic. The PICU has updated facilities with 13 ventilators and has been adjudged in a row as the best Intensive care Unit in JIPMER for the years 2010 and 2011. The emergency unit runs round the clock and handles all pediatric emergencies. This department is uniquely placed to train students under taught and research Degrees programs at all (Undergraduate, postgraduate, Fellowship and Doctoral) levels. With 09 Faculty Members focusing on specialized aspects of pediatric care, the department guides and trains 2 DM Residents in Pediatric Critical Care, 2 Fellows in Pediatric Critical and Emergency Care,2 Ph.D scholars,6 Senior residents and 54 PG Junior residents annually. The department also supports the Nursing College of JIPMER to run its B.Sc, M.Sc courses and Post-B.Sc specialized training in Pediatric critical care nursing.

The Department has regular teaching program round the year for undergraduate (M.B.B.S) including Interns Basic and Advanced Pediatric Life Support Courses and post graduate (M.D) students including AHA-PALS courses. The Department also runs a Fellowship program in Paediatric Critical Care and Emergency and DM Pediatric Critical Care with intake of two students per year respectively.During the Academic year 2011-12, Paediatric Endoscopy services were also started in the Department.

Research on health issues with a crying need at the Regional and National level is the priority of the department.. The department was instrumental in formulating the National Policy on Management of Snake bites (2007). Continuing research on scorpion and snake envenomations from the department have provided tiered protocols for these neglected rural emergencies. The department is committed to improve child health care through excellence in patient care, teaching and research. The department has published more than 100 scientific papers in the last 5 years in indexed journals of national and international repute.


The Department owes its current stature to Dr Satya Gupta,Dr P.S Balakrishnan, Dr. K.K.Khanna , Dr. Ishwar Chander Verma, Dr.Ramesh Kumar Puri, Dr. Baldev Bhatia, Dr S. Srinivasan and Dr. B.Vishnu Bhat who provided Leadership at various phases of its growth and development. Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is in place as full-fledged Units since 2001.

Currently, the department is headed by Dr. S. Mahadevan, supported by team of Nine dedicated Faculty.
